Android executives reeled off several eye-popping statistics

Image

Android executives reeled off several eye-popping statistics about their
open-source smartphone platform at Google I/O earlier this month.
Attendees learned there have been more than 100 million
Android activations worldwide, with 450,000 Android developers combining to pump
200,000 applications into the Android Market. One stat Google didn't tout? How
many of those apps were paid apps as opposed to simply ad-supported apps.

Mobile analytics firm Distimocrunched the numbers and found that the bulk of
Android developers simply aren't making a lot of money from applications they
publish and sell in the Android Market.

Distimo found that only two of the 72,000
paid apps in the Android Market have been downloaded more than half a million
times worldwide to date. Conversely, six of the 211,000 paid iPhone apps in
Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store generate the same number of downloads from April
1 to May 19 in the United States alone.

For a telling snapshot, Dis…

A NEW RACE IS BORN
The star-studded international fleet, for the first edition of theRolexVolcano Race, was given a rousing send off in the medieval quarter of Gaeta. This morning, representatives from each of the competing yachts were given a memento of the occasion by the Mayor of Gaeta,Antonio Raimondi. Norway wants to channel billions of dollars to renewable energies in developing nations

Image
Norway wants to channel billions of dollars to renewable energies in developing nations, building on a scheme to protect tropical forests to which Oslo has been
the biggest donor, officials said.
With cash to spare as the world's number six oil exporter, Norway wants
governments and private investors to join a plan it calls Energy+ to promote
green energies such as solar or wind power to combat climate change.

"Energy+ is an initiative to promote access to energy and low-carbon
development" in developing nations, according to an internal document from the
Ministry of International Development obtained by Reuters.

Developed countries promised in 2009 to raise climate aid to $100 billion a
year from 2020, to help developing nations curb emissions of greenhouse gases
and adapt to impacts such as floods, droughts, heatwaves and rising
seas.

Few rich countries have outlined plans for how they will increase aid until
2020 as budget cuts bite in many nations and shorter-term do…

An increasingly farcical game of cat-and-mouse between Britain's media and celebrities

Image

An increasingly farcical game of cat-and-mouse between Britain's media and celebrities, Twitter users and the judiciary prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to promise a review of the country's privacy laws on Monday.
For weeks British media have been fighting the growing use by the rich and famous of "super injunctions" -- English court orders which prevent publication of unwelcome stories and prohibit journalists from even reporting that a ban is in place.

A newspaper in Scotland, which has its own legal system, ran a photograph on Sunday of a top player with an English soccer club over an article calling it "unsustainable" to bar reporters from naming the man identified in hundreds of Twitter postings as among celebrities using court orders to stifle sex scandals.

Rival fans taunted the player during a weekend match, adding to the furor over his efforts to maintain his anonymity.

Cameron, in a television interview, said: &q…

Sprint and Google Voice resulting in overage fees

Image

Sprint customers who have linked their Google Voice account with their smartphones are experiencing some unexpected overage fees, according to the help forums for both companies.Google Voice, the search engine's free call management service, lets users associate calls and text messages made to any phone with a special number.Google and partner Sprint cut a deal in March to let Google Voice users associate their numbers with Sprint phones so that subscribers can receive Google Voice calls. This deal, which was formallyactivated earlier this month, was a somewhat surprising move on Sprint's part, considering that the country's four top carriers feared Google Voice would render them as simply dumb pipes carrying data.Sprint lets users choose to make calls either with the caller ID showing their Sprint phone number or their Google Voice number. The second option is giving people fits. ZDNet noted that Sprint and Google Voice users reported that wh…

The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will be "above normal",

Image
Image via WikipediaThe 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will be "above normal", spawning six to 10 hurricanes of which around half could become
major, the government's weather agency forecast on Thursday.
However, as the 2010 season showed -- it was very active but the U.S.
coastline escaped a hit -- a high frequency of storms does not always translate
into more destructive landfalls.

In its first forecast for the season that begins on June 1, the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipated 12 to 18 named storms,
a somewhat lower level of activity than the 2010 Atlantic hurricane
season.

Six to 10 of those storms were seen developing into hurricanes, of which
three to six could become major at Category 3 or above, with winds of more than
110 miles per hour (177 km per hour), the agency said.

"NOAA's forecast team is calling for an above-normal season this year," NOAA
Administrator Jane Lubchenco told a news conference outside the agency…

China's landmark Three Gorges Dam project provides benefits to the Chinese

Image
China's landmark Three Gorges Dam project provides benefits to the Chinese
people, but has created a myriad of urgent problems from the relocation of more
than a million residents to risks of geological disasters, the Chinese
government said on Thursday.
The statement from China's State Council, or cabinet, marked a rare
acknowledgment of the issues that have shadowed the world's largest dam, an
engineering feat designed to tame the Yangtze River that snakes from the Tibetan
plateau to Shanghai.

"At the same time that the Three Gorges project provides huge comprehensive
benefits, urgent problems must be resolved regarding the smooth relocation of
residents, ecological protection, and geological disaster prevention," the
statement said, which appeared on the government's website
(www.gov.cn).

Premier Wen Jiabao presided over the meeting that produced the statement,
which also said problems existed for down-river transport, irrigation and water
supplies.

France to host technology titans

Image
Image by Downing Street via Flickr
French President Nicolas Sarkozy will host technology titans, including
Facebook, Google and Amazon, at a summit to debate how governments can encourage
innovation on the Internet, while taming its excesses.
The forum, which is to be held on May 24-25 in Paris, is part of Sarkozy's
year-long tenure as the president of the G8 group of major economies.

Sarkozy wrote on his Facebook page on Friday that the social networking
site's founder Mark Zuckerberg, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and Amazon's Chief
Executive Jeff Bezos would be attending.

The talks will focus on Internet regulation, its economic impact, fostering
innovation, and protecting intellectual property rights online.

They come at a time when the U.S. and Europe are adopting divergent
regulations on hot-button tech issues such as privacy online, net neutrality,
and antitrust protections. A large gap has also emerged between the flourishing
innovation-based economy of Silicon Valley

A new bill to give the federal government the power to shut down Websites

Image
Image via WikipediaA new bill to give the federal government the power to shut down Websites
“dedicated to infringing activities,” is currently making the rounds in the U.S.
Senate. The bill, if passed, would give the government the power to shut down
piracy sites.

“Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of
Intellectual Property” or PROTECT
IP
, is a revised version of the controversial "Combating Online Infringement
and Counterfeits Act," or COICA, that was introduced and killed last year.

The revised legislation would allow the government to obtain court orders to
require ISPs, search engines, ad networks and online payment processors to stop
supporting sites with pirated content.

The Patriot IP act, which a bipartisan group of 11 senators introduced May
12, would allow the government to bring lawsuits against piracy sites and force
search engines like Google and Bing from displaying links to those sites in
their results pages.

Facebook adopted a warning service

Image
Image via CrunchBaseFacebook adopted a warning service to help users avoid clicking on dubious internet links, with a website ratings system developed by a Finnish startup.
The new warning service by Helsinki-based Web of Trust (WOT) helps Facebook boost security for its more than 500 million users, amid growing concerns of online scams, spam and malware.
WOT's software calculates the reputation of 31 million web pages and updates the ratings twice an hour, based on feedback from some 20 million users.
With the new feature, an improvement to its existing safety-scanning system, a click on a link to a low-reputation website prompts a warning message. The ratings are based on the input of some 20 million people and data from information security companies that blacklist harmful websites.
Facebook declined comment on the volume of security attacks and the value of the deal with WOT was not disclosed.

Visa Inc, the world's largest credit and debit card processing network

Image
Image via WikipediaVisa Inc, the world's largest credit and debit card processing network, is building a digital wallet that people can use to pay for things online or with their phones instead of with traditional cards.
The network said on Wednesday it is working with several large U.S. and international banks to develop the wallet. Its partners include US Bancorp, PNC Financial Services, Regions Financial, BB&T Corp, Toronto Dominion's TD Bank and the U.S. arm of Barclays PLC.
The "digital wallet" will store the banks' customers' credit and debit card account information, both for Visa cards and other cards. People can use the wallet to pay for things online or in stores, Visa said.
The network will also have to convince merchants to put a new "one-click" button on their websites, so that potential customers can use their Visa digital wallets to buy things by clicking the button instead of by manually entering all of their account information …

$20. a month google chrome laptops

Image
Image via WikipediaWhile businesses will have the offer of integrated Google Chrome hardware and software at $50 per month, studentswill be able to have theirs for under half the price, a senior Google executive said.

$20 a month is very little for those who are less economically viable, or for many who simply want a dedicated device for their academic work. It will allow many students to simply switch off when they are not using their Chrome laptop.

Many students will already have Google Apps for Education in their university environment, though many more will be with Microsoft’s Live@edu service.
