Castaways Club

Under sunny skies...yes, no rain, just sun today....the Firsts had a grand day vs Comox RFC who were great lads, driving many hours to get in a game at Windsor Park.
The Comox team is to be commended for their combination of junior and senior players; for their exciting neversaydie play; and for their rugby sportsmanship.....may their Club program flourish for many seasons to come.
CW 29 Comox 7

The CW stepped up again in the front row...with several lads away or unavailable for other reasons.....Josh Handysides proved his ''rugby flexibility'' once again and took a few stitches to boot! (although no ''boot'' was involved) Guido showed up to prop if and when needed for CW...and he was needed, well done Guido. Even Dean Parchumchuk go into the front row act...and at 6' 5" he was a sight to see squeezed in up front.
Chris Horsely, working on his skills pre Bermuda trip, put in a few good minutes....as did a couple of young CW's Riis and Johnny…

James Bay Athletic Association 36 Castaway Wanderers 32

Nobody needed a manicure after this hard fought struggle at MacDonald Park! All nails were nibbled to the quick by nearly one thousand enthusiastic supporters of both sides. Scott Franklin burst through the JBAA defence following a lineout to score early in the game giving thoughts of victory to CW fans. He made it look easy, but tougher times were ahead. The boys in blue bounced back with two – if not attractive – well-worked pushover tries. The James Bay forwards were the difference in this encounter. After each phase of attractive running and passing rugby, the JBAA pack were able to slow the game down and gather themselves for a further engagement of ‘trench warfare’. Another break by Franklin sent Nathan Buckley over for a try which was converted by Chuck Baumberg. Sipili Molia split the JBAA defence with a sparkling run that put Tony LaCarte into the endzone for five points. The opposition replied with a kick ahead that was mishandled and resulted in a try for James Ba…

Castaways Club

Fans, friends, CW Rugby;
Firstly welcome to a number of new names that we have been able to add to our e-communication this week. Many of you are alumni of either Castaways or Wanderers, we welcome you to the CW family with apologies that we have not communicated before. We also welcome the CW Minis Family - parents of the 116 girls and boys we have registered between the ages of seven and fourteen in our weekly program at Windsor.

This Saturday at McDonald Park in James Bay the CW Sr First Division and Ellite teams do battle against James Bay at 1:00 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. James Bay lead the League in both Divisions although CW Ellites are also undefeated. Many of the Provincial pundits have suggested that the Bays will fight out the title with Capilano this season, an on-line poll seems to give little credit to CW having any say in this matter as well. CW will be fielding four National team players who will be doing battle against France and Rumania in two week's time and they, alo…

Castaway Wanderers v. Cowichan Saturday 15th October at Windsor Park.
After a two week lay-off it was most important that CW would quickly get down to the business of preparing for the upcoming local derby fixture against James Bay next Saturday. This was probably unfortunate for Cowichan who may have hoped to enjoy the glorious condition of the sun- drenched turf of Windsor Park with a competitive afternoon of ‘Elite Division’ rugby.

In fact Cowichan did not ever flinch from the task of defending bravely against what became a tsunami of fifteen tries from the well-drilled CW team. Their number eight, Barrie was conspicuous in defence with an exciting touchline tackle on Ken Goodland. Every tackle made by the ‘Green Piggies’ (as they are known in the Valley of the Sun) was thwarted by deft handling of the ball from man to man by their opposition. However any meaningful attack by the visitors was absent.

Scott Franklin led the CW scorers with four tries and was clearly hard to br…

He will be located in the pavilion during the half-time of both Firsts and Premiers. Friends and fans of CW Rugby;

Make a note on your calendar NOW!!! Saturday 15th our first Alumni Booster Luncheon. We've organised for 10% off baron of beef at The Penny. So beer and baron it is. Arrive around 11:30 for pre-game Guiness and we'll have some of our new players to drop in to meet you on their way to the Park. Meander down to support The Firsts in their efforts to conquer the Valleymen from Cowichan. The Premiers will be out to set the record straight about what it is they can really do when they are at full strength. Cowichan has certainly been creating some waves in their resurgence and full credit to them. We will also be making a special presentation to our major sponsor, Matt McNeill around 12:30. Matt has been marvellous in his support of CW rugby. Spread the word amongst your old mates.....although we think that we have most of you on the e-list, better yet, bring along a non-rugby friend. The train is on a roll but we need your support. Happy Thanksgiving.
